Donald Trump asks WTO to redefine developing country status, move likely to affect India

President Donald Trump on Friday asked the World Trade Organisation to define how it designates developing-country status.  In a memorandum, Trump empowered the US Trade Representative (USTR) to start taking punitive actions if any country, advanced economies, are inappropriately taking benefits of the WTO loopholes. Observing that nearly two-thirds of the WTO members have been able to avail special treatment and take on weaker commitments under the WTO framework by designating themselves as developing countries, Trump said while some developing-country designations are proper.  purchasing-power parity basis -- Brunei, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macao, Qatar, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates -- currently claim developing-country status," he said.  "When the wealthiest economies claim developing-country status, they harm not only other developed economies but also economies that truly require special and differential treatment. BIHAR AND ASSAM FLOODS IN DEATH TOLLS

The death toll in Bihar and Assam floods mounted to 174, with a total of 1.09 crore people being affected by the calamity in the two states, officials said. Though water levels have started receding in several districts of the two states, both reported two deaths each since Monday. With both the casualties taking place in Madhubani district of Bihar, the toll in the state reached 106. In Assam, the number of deaths touched 68 as two more people died in Morigaon and Golaghat districts since Monday. A total of 28.01 lakh people were affected in 19 of the 33 districts of the northeastern state, officials said in Guwahati. Though the flood waters have receded in Biswanath and Karbi Anglong districts, the deluge hit Lakhimpur and Baksa again, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
